This opportunity to gather together was created as a public platform for the whole community. Each organization’s projects or efforts are eager to communicate to a broader base what their group is doing to benefit our community. The drawing feature is good local food and the added aspect of breaking bread with each other! Our first Community Connections event was in May of 2010 and is a part of the ongoing efforts of the Northern Michigan Culinary Arts Community (NMCAC). How many networking relationships begin with a good meal, good conversations and most importantly good community-minded folks? The Community Connections events allows us to become literally more connected, more aware of the amazing community efforts and more inspired to engage in those efforts or create our own.

Each event uses the donated funds for the meal, to benefit a local community effort. Our first event’s donations helped to create the Eggmobile, as a part of the ongoing Farm to School effort. Our Fall Event donations were to benefit the ongoing Green Plate Challenge Farmer’s Market meals to highlight our great bounty of local products.

Our next event, a Soup Supper, with a preceding Soup Cooking Class is scheduled for Saturday, January 29th, 4:30-6:30 pm, at Trinity Lutheran Church (near the High School), 955 James St. Frankfort will benefit the Benzie County Water Council (BCWC) Water Festival, to be held March 18. To learn more of this upcoming event visit BCWC website: www.water-festival.org As with all Community Connections events, any remaining soups will be donated to the Community Spirit Food bank.

*Hearty Winter Soups Class will be limited to 10 people with reservations made by January 21. Please contact Suz, 352-7669 or stillgrinningkitchens@gmail.com to reserve your class seat! The $10 fee will help with costs incurred. If you want to have some ‘booth’ space for your organization or community effort, please notify Suz as well.

Water Festival preParty w/subPrime Blues Band

Wednesday, January 19th, 2011

Saturday, January 22, 2011 at 9:00pm – Sunday, January 23, 2011 at 12:00am
sub-Prime Blues BandOf all the things we love about Benzie County, WATER is one of the biggest ingredients: Lake Michigan beaches, floating on the rivers, swimming in the lakes, year round fishing, drinking fresh water from our backyard wells… the list goes on.

This year, a group of locals have decided to get together and celebrate this natural resource in the form of a Water Festival. But instead of squeezing in another summertime festival, this one will happen during the snowy months in Frankfort. We chose Frankfort because it has the buildings & businesses to accommodate this type of event, and is walkable to boot. There will be music, food, and lots of family friendly events all related to WATER on March 19th: www.water-festival.org.

On January 22nd, the Water Festival is synergizing with the sub-Prime Blues Band to raise awareness and money for the festival, and to support the Band’s efforts on their way to compete in the finals of the INTERNATIONAL BLUES CHALLENGE in Memphis, Tennessee in February.

What? Water Festival preParty: funraiser with sub-Prime Blues Band

Where? Cabbage Shed, Elberta

When? January 22nd @ 9pm

How much? $5.00

Why? Support the Water Festival and the sub-Prime Blues Band

Benzie Co. Players present “Skin Deep”

Wednesday, January 12th, 2011

Benzie County Players: Skin DeepA large, lonely-heart, named Maureen Mulligan, gives romance one last shot on a blind date with the amiable but awkward Joe Spinelli. She relies on sharp wit and wisecracks to cover her feelings; and he can’t contain his eagerness, which leaves him clumsy of manner and blunt in speech. But they’re perfect for each other, even if they won’t admit it. They were set up on the date by Maureen’s sister Shelia and her husband, the most charming and attractive Squire Whiting who is growing impatient with Sheila and her nonstop series of cosmetic surgeries. Years ago, Squire may have had some interest in Maureen, before Maureen introduced him to her beautiful, sister. Now with Squire feeling neglected and Maureen particularly vulnerable, those old feelings may be getting stirred up.
